Baltimore City and County and Carroll County Chapter The Baltimore Woman’s Bar Association (BWBA) is comprised of members from Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Carroll County. Its’ mission is to advance the interests of women engaged in the practice of law and increase the visibility of woman in society through law related activities. These activities include educational, social and networking events. Last year activities included an enjoyable and inspirational talk by the Honorable Ruth Jakubowski as well as network opportunities at our popular wine tasting event. Goals for the upcoming year include expanding our presence in the law schools and in Baltimore County and Carroll County. We plan to host an open forum on August 17, 2006 for all WBA members. The purpose of the forum is to generate ideas from the members for future activities. We will continue to distribute the BWBA pamphlet which is a concise and thorough handout explaining the missions and objectives of the Association. We host several signature events each year: our kickoff Normandie Farms Dinner and Scholarships Award Ceremony; a Judicial Reception for our Circuit Court judges and court personnel; the Fall Forum, an event designed to provide life coaching to teenage girls in our local high schools - past speakers include Dominique Dawes; our annual Holiday Party at which we solicit donations for a local charity, Crossway Communities; a Take Your Child to Work event, at which we host over a hundred middle school students for a lunch featuring career advice from a speaker - recent past speakers have included the likes of TV personalities, FBI agents, actresses, academics, and Ambassador Connie Morella; and, Women's Law Day where our members provide seminars and legal information to the clients of the County's Commission for Women on a variety of topics such as family law, landlord/tenant, estates and trust law, and small business issues. In addition, we host a triennial auction, to support our Chapter and provide charitable donations to local organizations. Our Chapter also has its own Foundation from which we make several scholarships each year to female students at Montgomery College and area law schools. University of Maryland Law School Chapter The Women's Bar Association (WBA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the interests of women in the School of Law, in the legal profession and in the larger community. WBA operates as a sounding board and a voice for the concerns of its members and of the student body. Its goal is to foster a greater sense of community among women by focusing on the interrelationships of women with the law and the legal profession. Toward this end, it sponsors student-faculty events, career panel discussions, and opportunities to network with practicing attorneys. Membership is open to all interested students from the day and evening divisions. Our major events of the year include the Race for the Cure and our Banquet. The Race for the Cure is a 5k walk/run which benefits breast cancer research to which we send a team every year. It is generally held in the fall (late September or early October) and in 2005 we had approximately 50 participants from the law school. Our banquet is generally a dinner discussion with a panel of women legal professionals who practice in different areas of the law. Historically it has been held in the spring, however, in 2005, the Board decided to move it to the Fall in order to increase participation. Elise Gelinas emgel9@gmail.com
